Georgia Poetry Circuit with Courtney Faye Taylor

  • The Book Lady Bookstore 6. E. Liberty Street Savannah, GA 31401 USA (map)

In her judge’s statement for the Cave Canem Poetry Prize, Rachel Eliza Griffiths said of Concentrate, “Taylor’s debut is a deftly woven journey that offers us historical and psychic perspectives that are intimate and expansive, as these poems drag us, by syntax and grace, to our nation’s threshing floor, which must be the page and the body.” Courtney Faye Taylor is both a writer and visual artist and was a finalist for the National Poetry Series.

WHAT IS THE CAVE CANEM POETRY PRIZE? Launched in 1999 with Rita Dove’s selection of Natasha Trethewey’s Domestic Work, this first-book award is dedicated to the discovery of exceptional manuscripts by Black poets of African descent.

WHAT IS THE GEORGIA POETRY CIRCUIT? Founded at Mercer University in 1985, the Georgia Poetry Circuit is a consortium of ten Georgia colleges and universities working together to bring three poets of national and international reputation annually to all members’ campuses, providing an important access to the literary arts for Georgia residents across the state. At each school, each Circuit poet gives a free and open reading of his/her work. Visiting poets also meet with creative writing students at each campus for workshops, talks, or extended question and answer sessions. In addition to the opportunity to hear work from diverse writers of national and international reputation, the Circuit events provide Georgia students with an immensely valuable educational opportunity for interaction with many of the best contemporary poets in the United States. Past GPC poets include Adrian Matejka, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Sholeh Wolpe, Kevin Prufer, and Kim Addonizio.
